Home Means Parkin’ As Long As You Want To the Editor: Imagine this. You’re getting into the holiday season, planning to have dinner at your parents’ house. You haven’t seen them in a bit and think it’ll be nice to catch up on things. As you finish work that day you begin thinking of your favorite meal. You make a stop at home to change and grab the ornament for their tree. You’re on your way. The trip doesn’t seem to take long and once you’re in their house the smell of that favorite meal consumes you. You exchange hellos, hugs and hang up you coat. You give the ornament which they hang on their tree. As you remove your shoes your dad offers you a drink. He sits in his favorite chair and just as you are about to relax on the couch he says, “How long are you plannin’ on parkin’ it there?” You’re puzzled, but he quickly continues “’cause it’s a dollar and hour.” I don’t know about you, but to me that just doesn’t feel like home. Neither will Cooperstown. I hope all of the elected officials of Cooperstown take a serious look at the paid-parking issue. Otherwise there will be a sense on the streets of Cooperstown has sold its soul. NICHOLAS G. WEIR Cooperstown To the Editor: On behalf of Cherry Valley Artworks I want to thank all the people who turned out for our production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” In spite of the frigid, snowy weather we played to packed houses at both performances. Dorothy Reiberg and her cast got the holidays off to the perfect start. Thanks to all the members of Artworks who worked so hard on the decorating of the Old School Cafe and turned it into such a warm and welcoming place (especially Artworks’ Vice President Patti Erway Engel’s beautiful mural). Thanks to Kathy Spitzhoff, whose wonderful poster captured the essence of our production. Artworks also wishes to express our special gratitude to the Otsego County Chamber, whose support made this wonderful event a reality. Cherry Valley is a small place, but it is a special place rich in talent, as Artworks many past events have demonstrated. Come to our next event and see for yourself. JANE SAPINSKY President Cherry Valley Artwork To the Editor: This year the Town of Hartwick has added a basketball court to the Town Park on Wells Avenue in the Hamlet of Hartwick. A couple of local business owners stepped forward and paid for the striping of the basketball court. Cooperstown Optical owners Bill and Todd Murdock deserve a BIG special thank you for their support of the youth of Hartwick. Because of their unsolicited generosity, there will be a great place to play for years to come. Thank you, Bill and Todd. MARY BALCOM Town Supervisor Hartwick To the Editor: Highlights of November’s Otsego County board meeting were a show by one representative intervening in a real-property concern on behalf of a member of the press and employee contributions to the county’s self-administered health plan (beginning January). What may be less obvious is that the advocate’s term ends in December, so the policy change will not require his contribution; his health benefits will remain paid in full by taxpayers. Otsego County has a reputation for paying low salaries; many existing employees accepted their positions because health insurance benefits were paid in lieu of a higher salary. What comes to your mind while watching an outgoing County Board show support for personal gain at some cost to the county and adopt inadequate means to continue an unsuccessful health plan at significant cost to the county in the good will and morale of county employees? I question the wisdom of alienating employees just to recapture a few dollars, especially when the health-plan deficit is so significant and growing. Self-administered health plans may have seemed the means to a few extra dollars but, historically, small plans do not have sufficient cash flow for success. Time and expense may better be invested looking at alternatives and revisiting the feasibility of a self-administered health plan. It is my fervent prayer that our new County Board will rise above the mudslinging and bullying tactics of past years and focus efforts on what is important to the county as a whole. I suggest that representatives work diligently to integrate individual talents and form a team that is interested in getting down to the business of county governance, e.g., managing county assets, establishing and enforcing policy and process that minimizes arbitrary action, maximizes effectiveness and discontinues spending good money after bad.
