John 8:12In the early evening hours of Thursday, April 5, 2007, Christopher Thomas Gentile, beloved son, brother, nephew, classmate and teammate, died unexpectedly as the result of an automobile accident. He was 18. Born Dec. 11, 1988, in Concord, Mass., Chris was adopted when he was 5 days old by Robert S. and Penney (Silvis) Gentile. He first lived with his family at their home on Goodyear Lake until moving to Cooperstown in 1991. Since he was a toddler, Chris has always been on the go. An energetic and loving child, his family feels blessed that he was in their lives for 18 years. A member of the Class of 2007 at the Cooperstown Central School, Chris was a well-liked classmate who excelled in athletics. During his four years of high school, he was a member of the boys' varsity soccer, basketball and tennis teams, and in his sophomore and junior years, was a Section III tennis champion. He was also involved with the Varsity C Club and SADD. During the summer months, Chris served as the assistant tennis pro at the Cooperstown Country Club. After graduation, he had planned on attending either Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., or St. Peter's College in New Jersey, where he was going to major in communications and play Division 1 tennis. It was his goal to one day become a sports broadcaster. A good, kind and friendly kid, Chris was always willing to help anyone and brought joy into the life of everyone he knew _ his smile could light up a room. A communicant of St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown, he will be greatly missed by everyone whose lives he touched. Chris is survived by his mother, Penney S. Gentile, and his brother, Robert J. Gentile, both of Cooperstown; his birth mother, Michelle, and three half-brothers, Josh, Kaleb and Braden; his father, Robert S. Gentile, and his wife, Allison Barnes, and her three children, Eric, Angie and David; his maternal grandparents, George and Kathy Silvis, of Mount Gilead, N.C.; three aunts, Pamela Silvis, of Dunedin, Fla., Eve Silvis Greene and her husband, Steven, of New Port Richey, Fla., and Kathy Howard and her husband, Art Baril, of West Roxbury, Mass.; and one uncle, Victor Silvis, of Summerville, S.C. He was predeceased by his cousin, Zachary Steven Greene, who died Nov. 27, 2005. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at St. Mary's "Our Lady of the Lake" Catholic Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. John P. Rosson, pastor, presiding. Immediately after the Mass, all attending are invited to gather in the St. Mary's Parish Center to celebrate Chris' life and share stories and memories. A Service of Committal and Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in St. Mary's Cemetery, Index. Friends may call at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown from 2 to 5 p.m. on Monday, April 9, 2007, when Chris' family will be in attendance. Chris' family would prefer that flowers not be sent.
